James F. Lee is Head of the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. He is the author of Task and Communicating in Language Classrooms. Alessandro G. Benati is Head of the Department of Languages at the University of Greenwich in the United Kingdom. He has researched and taught in the field of second language acquisition and teaching. He is co-author with James Lee of the following books: Delivering Processing Instruction in classrooms and in Virtual Contexts; Second Language Processing: An analysis of theory, problems and possible solutions. Research on treatment instructions has so far studied the main effects of treatment instructions. This book presents the results of a series of experimental studies examining the possible side and cumulative effects of treatment education on the acquisition of French, Italian and English as a second language. The results of the three experiments showed that teaching treatment offers learners not only the direct or primary advantage of learning to process and produce the morphological form in which they received instruction, but also a secondary advantage by transferring this training to the treatment and production of another morphological form for which they had not received instruction.
